Going on a safari had been a lifelong dream of mine. A mentor and safari expert told me, “If you’re going to do it right, go to Kenya.” We booked the trip 14 months in advance and spent the next year filled with anticipation—excitement, of course, but also a bit of nervousness. What would it be like? How should we prepare? Would it live up to the dream I’d carried for so long?
As soon as we landed, the adventure began. From that moment until the day we returned to the airport, every part of this trip exceeded my expectations. And since I had spent a lifetime imagining it, that is really saying something.
Below, I’ll share firsthand insights and an honest look at key parts of the experience so you know what to expect. Every trip we offer is one we have personally experienced and genuinely loved.
We use the following tiered scale to help summarize experiences:
We also indicate activity level using:
Our journey began in southern Kenya, a landscape surprisingly lush and green, filled with wide open plains. As we traveled north, the scenery shifted into the golden savanna many picture when they think of Africa, with the dramatic peaks of the Eastern Rift mountains in the distance. No matter where we were, the land was full of life—giraffes, zebras, lions, elephants—wild animals moving freely, just as you might see in a nature documentary.
Scenery: Exceptional
A nice mix of landscapes, from lush green plains to golden grasslands and rolling mountain views. The terrain was beautiful, but it was the abundance of wildlife that made every scene exceptional.
One of the most surprising things about safari is how peaceful and relaxing it is. Game drives take place in the early morning at sunrise and again in the evening, when animals are most active. Each morning begins with coffee or tea and a light snack delivered to your room. After the morning drive, you return to a full breakfast. Evenings follow the same rhythm—an incredible wildlife experience followed by a delicious dinner back at the lodge.
In the warmest part of the day, animals find shade and rest, and so do you. Whether you spend the afternoon reading a book, watching monkeys play nearby, swimming in the pool, or enjoying a massage, you’re encouraged to slow down and enjoy the moment. If you prefer to stay active, the lodges offer many options, from guided walks to cultural visits and more.
Activity Level: Moderate
Mornings and evenings are filled with optional game drives, with relaxed afternoons in between. You can adjust each day to your personal pace.
Every game drive brought something different. One evening, we followed a lioness and her cub as they searched for their pride. Another day, we watched a pride of lions quietly stalk antelope for over an hour. One morning, we reached the top of a hill to find a herd of elephants peacefully sharing the road with us. We walked alongside rhinos in a nearby sanctuary one afternoon. You never knew what each outing would bring, but it was always something unforgettable.
The babies were another highlight—elephants, zebras, warthogs, giraffes, jackals, rhinos, and more. Watching them play was pure joy. Add in a glass of wine, fresh snacks, and the warm glow of golden hour, and it felt like a dream.
Our guides were deeply knowledgeable and genuinely passionate about the land. One of them, a senior warrior from the Maasai tribe, shared his personal journey with us. His stories offered a rare and meaningful glimpse into the culture and traditions of his community. Everyone we met added something special to our time in Kenya.
Experiences: Exceptional
Wildlife sightings were plentiful, surprising, and emotional. Cultural insights and authentic conversations made the journey feel personal and unforgettable.
Each lodge offered a peaceful, intimate experience with a small number of guests and many operated by hands-on owners. From the moment we arrived, we felt like part of the family. The accommodations were both comfortable and beautifully connected to the natural surroundings, enhanced by thoughtful touches and luxurious amenities.
Between game drives, we were looked after by some of the best in the world of hospitality. The staff were warm, attentive, and incredibly knowledgeable. We especially enjoyed hearing their stories and gaining insight into daily life in Kenya.
Accommodations: Exceptional
The lodges were remote, quiet, and full of character. While there were a few small things—such as beds that were a bit firmer than we prefer—those details were easy to overlook in the midst of such an extraordinary stay.
The food exceeded expectations. Meals were familiar but elevated—fresh eggs, seasonal salads, grilled meats, and warm breads all prepared with care. Each meal was served in a beautiful setting, from open-air lawns glowing with lanterns under the stars to intimate tables beside a crackling fire. Every detail felt intentional, and every meal left a lasting impression.
Meals are typically served as a single set menu for all guests. Breakfasts allow for more customization. If you have dietary needs or preferences, be sure to let us know in advance so we can make arrangements.
Dining: Memorable
The food was fresh, satisfying, and beautifully presented. While no single dish stood out as life changing, every meal was enjoyable.
I had dreaded the flights between lodges, but they turned out to be nothing to worry about. In Kenya, flying is truly a way of life. The planes were simple but safe, and the pilots were excellent. Once in the air, I found myself enjoying the view. I recommend grabbing a window seat, putting on some music (make sure to download it before you board), and soaking in the scenery.
On land, you spend much of your time in safari vehicles. These vary slightly by lodge—some are more modern, others more rustic—but all come equipped with essentials like drinks and blankets. Expect bumpy rides and off-road paths as you track wildlife through the bush.
Transfers: Memorable
While the planes and vehicles were basic in comfort, the experiences during each transfer—from flying over vast terrain to up-close animal sightings—were thrilling and unforgettable.
Twelve days in Kenya felt like stepping into another world—one filled with breathtaking landscapes, incredible animals, and unforgettable people. It was everything I had hoped for and more.
If you have ever dreamed of going on safari, consider this your invitation. Kenya, especially when experienced through Niksen Travel, offers a journey that is both thrilling and transformative. It is the kind of trip that never leaves you. The stories stay with you. The feeling stays with you. And long after you return home, you’ll find yourself remembering it all, again and again.
